Three new grooving pizzicato patterns!
Today, I’d like show you how to play some cool pizzicato patterns on the cello, and be a groovy cellist.
I’ll be showing you how I arrange a drum and bass groove into 3 unique pizzicato patterns using the song Lotus Flower, by one of my favorite bands Radiohead.
Arranging a Groove
When you’re arranging a groove on the cello from a song, you want to listen closely to the groove that the drums and bass are doing. If you listen to the drum groove in the song Lotus Flower, which is in 4/4 meter, you’ll notice he’s doing the following rhythm in eight notes:
1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2
And the bass is playing on the one’s. 1, 1, 1
For this arrangement, I’m going to show you three different pizzicato patterns in which I mixed the original bass line with a moving groove on the open strings.
Pizzicato Cello Patterns
First Pizzicato Pattern
For the first pizzicato pattern that I want to show you on the verse, I was inspired by the Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson, who also plays a groovy cello. He uses guitar picking technique and translates it onto the cello by flipping his hand 90 degrees.
In this verse pattern, the thumb plays the bass line, and the 1st and 2nd fingers play the moving groove on the open strings.

For the second pizzicato pattern that I play on the second verse, I take that bass line and transpose it down the octave, and use different fingers.
I want to get a rich sound from the C-string, so I found that using my second finger allows the notes to resonate much better. If I was to approach it with the thumb like in the first pizzicato pattern, the sound is more muted and you don’t get as much power as you do with the second finger.
Third Pizzicato Pattern
On the chorus of Lotus Flower, the groove changes, and I wanted to reinterpret that play between the drums and bass, so here’s a totally new pizzicato pattern that I use. The thumb plays the first two eight notes, and then you have a 4-finger “splat” on the two upper strings, almost a flamenco-like approach.
