Overcoming fear and playing with Confidence!

Today I’d like to show you how to play any piece with confidence.

This video is inspired by a very special historical figure, a queen who showed a great deal of confidence and courage in having to face something that was very scary for her.  It is Queen Esther of the special story of the holiday Purim that we just celebrated.  Queen Esther was married to the most powerful ruler of the eastern world, a King who at one point ruled from India to Ethiopia!  She had the difficult task of requesting to speak with him, which wasn’t even allowed, and stand up for an severe injustice about to be done to her people.  Imagine her fear, her doubt in her ability to perform.  It’s so much like playing music!

The piece I will be using is the ‘Concerto-Rhapsody’ for Cello and Orchestra by Aram Khachaturian.  This piece particularly challenged me to face my fears,  and like this Queen, the task showed me how to conquer the fear and perform like a queen.  So today I want to share with you my tips on how to play any piece with confidence.

Practice!

The first thing you want to do is – PRACTICE! It’s obvious, but it needs to be done well because it’s the bread and butter of this recipe.

Through the practicing, you will come to know where your Achilles heel is, that passage or spot that is difficult to play each time.

The most difficult part of this piece is the very beginning. The orchestra has just finished their dramatic introduction, and the cello begins its solo cadenza with a most revealing shift from Ab to Ab, and the only thing you’re thinking is: “am I going to nail this or not?”

And that’s where our work begins because playing with confidence is not a technical trick, it’s completely in the mind and in the heart.

Playing with confidence is all in the mind

Each one of us has our own unique fingerprint in this world.  As we come to the moments of performing, we are completely exposed, with all our beauty and all our weaknesses.  And that voice in our head starts talking to us, and holds us back with lies like “you’re not good enough” or “you’re not going to be be able to play that passage” “you’ll never succeed”. That’s a voice that tears us down, not a voice that builds us up, so let’s recognise it, and tell it to BE QUIET!

Put on your crown of royalty!

When we silence that negative voice, we must replace it with a positive voice.  A voice that will build us up, the voice of our inner royalty, yes, the King that you are, the Queen that you are.  Put on your crown, say to yourself “I am special, What a gift I bring”, and that “I’m going to nail this passage!” (You can do it!)

Practice the thinking

I said earlier that this is not a technical method, it’s a method of the mind, but we still need to practice it.  In your room, as you’re practicing, and you’re coming up to the passage that incites fear in you, start thinking in advance, “I can do this. I’m going to play this amazingly”. Feel that crown on your head.  If you can master this technique in your practice room, you have a high chance to master it on stage and truly nail each passage that incited any fear or doubt in you.

Remember my Kings, my Queens, we have a unique and powerful fingerprint in this world – that is our music.  Be brave, be courageous, and know that you are already amazing.

That’s my tip on playing with confidence.

Thanks for watching. I hope this video has inspired you.

Be blessed and Happy Purim.
